The Basics of Font Design and Font-Engineering

Short Course

Creating a font is a hard and long process. Everything begins with a font design, which is later outlined in graphic programs. The improved contours are ready for engineering. We often need to foresee many design details which will play an important role in creating a perfect font-file. Other than designers and font-engineers, numerous other specialists are involved in this process, including testers, hinting specialists, etc.

The goal of this course is to focus on font-engineering, which is a key element of font-creation. During the course we’ll need to foresee many important details, because without them it will be difficult to get a perfect font-file.

A font-engineer is responsible for the design and font-file conversion. This requires patient observation and the understanding of codes and program tools.

Unfortunately, the profession of font-engineer does not exist in Georgia, so most of the popular fonts don’t meet international standards.

The goal of the course is to give the students an in-depth knowledge of font-engineering. It will help them in the future to create fonts which will work properly in every program and will meet all needed criteria.
